The pollution of Hudson and Brooklyn River shall be higher than the one around the oil platform in the South Sea last year, so going to the beach around Manhattan is not expected as healthy. However, there are some interesting spots in the area: In New Jersey, Coney Island and Long
Beach. Some colleges advised Long Beach to me as easy to reach. Well, so we had a try. We bought train tickets and started at Penn Station with the Long Island Railroads. Before that I had had a look at google maps and had been wondering why the train needs a full hour for the short but after 45 minutes in train - mainly waiting
The beach was nice, long and definitely packed at the main areas. Actually, we didn’t have perfect weather but it was warm and sunny enough to get a well-developed sunburn.
Die Verschmutzung des Hudson und des Brooklyn Rivers sollen höher sein, als in der Südsee, nachdem die Ölplatform letztes Jahr mehrere Monate das Wasser verseuchte. Dennoch gibt es einige interessante Strände in der TriState Area: in New Jersey, Coney Island und Long Beach zum Beispiel. Ein paar Kollegen hatten uns Long Beach empfohlen und so machten wir uns mal auf den Weg. Wir kauften Fahrkarten für die Long Island Railroad und starteten von der Pennstation. Ich hatte zuvor im Internet die Strecke verfolgt und mich gewundert, warum der Zug für das kurze Stück eigentlich 60 Minuten braucht, aber während wir mit dem Zug
fuhren, wurde das klarer … die meiste Zeit standen wir. Interessant war auch die extrem hohe Anzahl an ‘Mind the gap’ Warnhinweisen im Zug und auf dem Bahnsteig.
Der Strand wurde seinem Namen gerecht, ein langgezogener Strand, der übrigens gut besucht war. Dabei war das Wetter nicht einmal ganz optimal. Es reichte aber für einen ausgewachsenen Sonnenbrand.

Okay, Long Beach was nice but complicated to reach. Within the same time frame we could also reach the Far Rockaways. The benefits of them are: They are directly reachable with the A-Train Subway, if only you take the correct of the three possible southern terminal stations. In the next weeks these became our main beach areas.
Okay, Long Beach war ganz nett, aber kompliziert hinzukommen. In der selben Fahrzeit konnten wir auch die Far Roackaways erreichen. Der große Vorteil: Einfach mit der Subway hinfahren. Man muss nur den A-Train nehmen, der gleich vor der Haustür abfährt und dann aufpassen, dass man die richtige der drei südlichen Endstationen nimmt. Die Gegend hat durch ihren Gebäudestil einen interessanten Flair.
